Story

The machair flowers on the croft are at their showiest in July and they are sure to attract even more splashes of colour in the form of butterflies. Small Tortoiseshells, Red Admirals, Common Blues and Meadow Browns make an appearance every summer along with the occasional Painted Lady. Some years are known as Painted Lady Years – when many thousands of these beautiful creatures fly across the Minch from mainland Scotland (having already made an astonishing journey from continental Europe) to delight us as they flutter in huge numbers over the croft creating warm, glowing, patterned clouds.

I wanted to convey the essence of numerous Painted Ladies in motion and so I created abstract repeating patterns for both the main body and the edgings of the garment and worked them in warm shades of Hebridean 2 Ply. The style is classic with set-in sleeves. The method is stranded two-colour knitting in the round with steeks at the front, neck and armholes. The sleeves are worked separately in the round to the sleeve caps, which are worked back and forth in rows.
