The cardigan is designed with one main background colour and five graded, contrast pattern colours. The photographed Gleann Mòr is knitted with a Main Background colour of Calluna with Contrast Pattern colours of Golden Plover (1), Corncrake (2), Machair (3), Bogbean (4) and Lapwing (5), worked in that order from the cast-on edges of the body and sleeves. It is a stranded, two-colour design with the body worked in the round with steeks at the front, armholes and neck. The sleeves are worked separately, with cuffs worked back and forth in rows. The completed cuffs are joined into the round for working to the underarm, then the set-in sleeve caps are worked back and forth in rows. 37[37,38,38,39] 10-12mm diameter buttons are required for the deep ribbed cuffs and front opening. The buttons are not included in the kit.

The Gleann Mòr is shown here worn with a pair of gloves from the Briodag Hat Set.

Story

Gleann Mòr, Hirta’s summer pasture throughout its human history, is enclosed by hills that form a steep-sided horseshoe shape, facing North to the ocean and the island of Soay. The remains of the Heroine’s house still stands here, close to the Well of Virtues, and when she wasn’t off on one of her legendary hunting escapades, she was in charge of the summer pasture.
I have a strong sense of kinship with the women and girls who spent their summers on the àirigh pasture tending to the animals, as I belong to the last Hebridean generation to take part in that form of transhumance. In Lewis the practice died out in the mid- 60s just as I entered my teens, but all of my childhood summers were spent at our family àirigh out on the moor. We lived intimately with the natural world, being a living part of it ourselves and so the idea of the Heroine as the matriarchal character of the summer pasture has a special appeal for me, and it is the inspiration for this design. The colours reflect the vegetation of the gleann in its full summer glory, whilst the pattern is a nod to the birds who wheel around the skyline catching the updrafts above the steep ramparts.
Like its sister, the Boreray Pullover, the deep two-colour ribs speak of the vertical nature of the landscape and they also provide an eminently practical fitted silhouette which I hope will appeal to strong, practical, patient and heroic women and girls of all ages.
