Story

Sea colours, ripples and the perpetual motion of kelp forests were my themes for creating the Selkie cardigan. I explored the element in which the Selkie excels and how it changes from its limited movements on shore to a creature of balletic grace in water as it becomes at one with the underwater world. I translated this graceful transformation into an elegant, lightly-fitted body shaping for the cardigan.

The design is worked in the round with steeks at all openings. The sleeves are worked separately in the round to the armholes and then the caps are worked back and forth in rows. The body has subtle shaping within the vertical “seaweed” panels and so these patterns shrink in size to the waist and are then turned upside-down and expanded again to complete the body. So this is a design that requires a degree of expertise and concentration.
