Emperor Hat Set
Description
Knitted Measurements:
Beret: Circumference 64.5cm. Brim to Crown 26cm.
Gloves: Width around at knuckles 19.3[20.7,22]cm.
The Emperor Hat Set kit includes a colour-printed patterncard with full instructions for the beret and gloves, and all the Alice Starmore Hebridean™ 2 Ply yarn in the 9 shades required to make the set. The instructions for the gloves are provided in three sizes. Enough yarn is provided in the kit to make the largest size of gloves.
The beret and the patterned area of the gloves are worked in the stranded circular knitting technique. If you are new to this technique then there is a graded progression you can follow, starting with the beret which introduces double decrease shaping in the patterned crown. The fingerless gloves will teach you how to make thumb gussets and how to work each digit in the round.
Needles are not included in this kit. You will require:
Beret: 1 Set of double-pointed or 40cm-long circular 2.75mm & 3.5mm needles. Note: If using a circular 3.25mm needle, a set of double-pointed 3.5mm needles will be required to complete the crown.
Gloves: 1 set of double-pointed 2.5mm sock needles. 1 Tapestry needle. 1 Stitch marker.
Story
Moths are often imagined to be the drab relatives of butterflies. There are a few who fit that bill not least the dreaded clothes moth, but there are also thousands of species of beautiful moths who do us no harm and who grace the world with their presence. I find them all the more alluring because they are often hard to find: most are night-fliers and many are confined to specific habitats.
One of the most delightful experiences is to walk the Hebridean moorland in April and May and marvel at the sight of beautiful male Emperor Moths in daytime flight. Their wingspan reaches over 3cm, with both under and outer wings decorated in bold patterns and rich colours. In flight they can be imagined as little pieces of the spring moorland flying rapidly up into the sky. This was the happy memory I held in mind whilst designing the Emperor Hat Set.
