Story
I based the design for this hat set on capillifolium, one of the radiant sphagnum mosses that grows profusely on our famous Lewis Blanket Bog. S. Capillifolium has always been a favourite of mine: it grows especially beautifully by lochs and pools and ranges in colour from pale yellow, through golds, orange to vibrant reds. These are the shades of 2 Ply Hebridean I chose to depict the plant growing by the blue water in the summer.
On cold grey days it is lovely to be reminded of these intense summer colours whilst also keeping warm. The set is a quick and satisfying knit which also provides a lot of interest: it includes not only colourwork but a range of shaping, including short-rows worked on the earflaps as well as the shaping on the hat crown and on the snug neckwarmer. It is an ideal little project for any knitter with experience in the stranded technique. It also makes a lovely gift for an appreciative recipient.
