Wild Orchid – 50g Hebridean 3 Ply
Alice Starmore Hebridean 3 Ply Yarn is made from premium quality pure new British wool, dyed in the fleece and skillfully blended into unique shades. It is hand-washed and dried in the Hebridean air, and supplied in hand-made skeins which may vary in weight. It is priced per 50g at standard conditions. All yarn is weighed to order on balances that are checked daily to ensure that you receive the correct total amount.
Wild Orchid is part of the Summer Isle range, which is inspired by the tiny Summer Islands in the mouth of Loch Broom.
It is shown here in knitted in the Secret Garden design from the book The Children’s Collection.
Orchids tend to be associated with a hot, steamy environment, so it surprises most people to discover there are varieties that grow on our northern peat moors. They are quite small, but get down to their level and you will see they are as exotic in appearance as anything from a jungle. There are various species and sub-species, making them quite difficult to positively identify. I am (almost) positive that the one that grows on my croft is Dactylorhiza Ericetorum. It is not common in Britain as a whole but grows quite profusely in the Outer Hebrides. It flowers in May to July, and we have used its lilacs, violets and mauves as the model for our blend.
