Story
Sir William Burrell appreciated fine needlework and his collection contains many fine pieces. My favourites are the large wall hangings from central Asia which are known as suzani: a Tadzhik word meaning embroidered cloth. They were usually made of undyed, unbleached cotton embroidered with floss silk. The motifs were floral and the colours tended to be warm. I have emulated the effect in knitting by using strong reds emphasised by a contrasting blue background. Both the pattern elements from the original vest in the book, and the qualities of our Hebridean 2 Ply cried out to be worked as a wrap, which is why I wrote the pattern amendment.
