Story

My Scarborough gansey design is based on the idea of the basic working fisher gansies that were produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. These gansies featured small, simple patterns that could be more quickly knitted in a wide variety of sizes, which was important as they were mainly made for sale. There is charm and versatility in the simplicity of both silhouette and patterning, so this is a garment which will look stylish and comfortable on any figure, worn either casually or dressed up.

I’ve designed it in six adult sizes, worked in my Hebridean 3 Ply yarn which displays the textured patterning to perfection. The Hebridean 3 Ply also has the great benefit of producing a soft and lightweight garment that is highly suited to life in the 21st century. I’ve knitted it here in Solan Goose and it is sure to look equally beautiful in any of our Hebridean 3 Ply shades.

This is also an ideal design to discover and practise all the classic elements of knitting a gansey in the round with underam gussets, without the strain and time involved in knitting with the dense and heavy original 5 ply gansey yarn. If you are an experienced gansey knitter then you will also enjoy knitting a lightweight classic gansey with ease and speed. The knitting is straightforward, so whether you are a beginner or an expert, this is a project that will allow you to concentrate on achieving and perfecting an even tension throughout the whole fascinating gansey process.
