Story
Ravens are masters of the air. In stormy weather I can watch them from my studio as they suddenly rocket into view using the upcurrents around the clifftops to soar and plummet, forming kite-like shapes. I wanted to create a garment that would have the swagger and swing of the birds in flight and so I designed the poncho with its flattering curved and flaring shape to do just that.
The poncho is worked in four pieces and the curved shaping is achieved by working short rows. I wanted the poncho to have a dramatic shape: wide at the base but fitting snugly around the chest and neck. In order to effect this shape I worked decreases both at each side and also on either side of a straight centre panel on each piece. This involves decreasing at the sides on every fourth row and at each side of the centre panel on every sixth row. This means that the pairs of side decreases and the pairs of inner decreases are worked over a repeating 12-row sequence. Three out of four decrease pairs are worked on separate rows and one out of four decrease pairs are worked on the same row. This is a recipe for confusion and makes keeping track rather difficult. To eliminate this problem entirely, I devised a tabulated method to keep track of both side and inner pairs of decreases as you work. This makes knitting the poncho fast and easy.
The poncho is worked in Hebridean 3 Ply with the collar feathers worked in matching 2 Ply. The kit includes enough Hebridean 3 Ply yarn to make the poncho and enough Hebridean 2 Ply yarn to make a triple-layered feathered collar as shown in the photographs.
