Story

The idea for Mystic was born out of a desire to commemorate my aunt Annie Macleod. My knowledge of her came through my mother and now my only link to her is through a class photo and the numerous books she won as school prizes for her general proficiency and her exceptional skills in needlework. She left the Isle of Lewis on an emigrant ship to Canada in 1930, aged eighteen and full of excitement and optimism. She contracted meningitis on the voyage and died on arrival in Quebec. I often wonder what she might have achieved in the New World had she lived.

Both she and I were born into the knitting tradition of fisher gansies and so I dedicated my book Fishermen’s Sweaters to her memory. It was important to me to include some original designs which I would name after seaports in the New World. Mystic is one of them and I chose to take the idea of an old gansey motif – the anchor – and portray it in an entirely new form. Rather than a small knit and purl symbol, I designed the anchor as a bold, sculpted form and placed it in vertical panels with chain and plaited rope cables which I framed at each side with a little knit and purl gansey pattern. The cabled neckband, knitted separately as a long strip and sewn on round the neckline, completed the new look for the New World. I like to think that Annie would have approved of my efforts.
