Story

I wanted this design to showcase the fine workmanship which can be achieved with my Hebridean 2 Ply yarn. It features a simple textured pattern for the sides and sleeves of the jacket, and panels of textured zig-zag lines that climb upward, with a single ladder pattern above the vent at the centre back. Instead of the free-form embroidery of the costume, I lightly embroidered the regular zig-zag panels with stars and French knots, some self-coloured and some in contrast colours.

The jacket is lightly shaped to the waist with all the shaping taking place within the side panels. There is a lot of scope for variation in the embroidery as it is entirely optional, being worked after the pieces are knitted. The collar of the jacket is worked in a textured stranded colour pattern, and the finishing touch are the buttons which are knitted, embroidered and then felted into little orbs.

The matching hat is entirely worked in the round. I created a textured stranded colour pattern for the brim of the hat and worked the crown in a textured geometric pattern in the main colour. Once knitted, the hat is then strategically embroidered around and within the geometric patterning of both brim and crown patterns. The decorative orb on the top is knitted, embroidered and then felted. The hat is an ideal small project with which to practise textured stranded knitting, embroidery and felting.

The kit includes enough contrast  yarns for embroidery and adding colour to the felted buttons
