Story

As its name suggests, I took my original inspiration for Faroe from the little patterns I saw on the garments worn by Faroese fishermen who occasionally came ashore in my home town of Stornoway. The garments they wore featured one small and simple repeated pattern, usually worked in a dark colour on pale background, and though the patterns were very basic they invariably made a bold impact. For my Faroe I created several simple patterns and arranged them in vertical panels; then I reversed the traditional two-colour scheme so that the main (background) is the darker shade and the contrast (pattern) is the pale shade. I designed the garment in the gansey style, knitted in the round with diamond-shaped underarm gussets which I also decorated with patterns. The sleeves are knitted up from the armholes and worked in the round to the cuffs, so the garment is entirely seamless. Since it is also a stranded-colour design, it features steeks at the armholes and neck and so there is a broad range of techniques to practice whilst knitting.

It is over thirty years since I first created this design and so I’ve updated the proportions and expanded the size range to include six sizes. It’s a wonderfully versatile design –  easy to wear both casually and dressed-up, and its small-scale patterns, which are easy to memorize, make this a relaxing pleasure to knit.  You can also add a personal touch by choosing your own two colours; whatever your choice, you can be sure that this design will make a bold statement.
