Story

Not all items in The Burrell Collection are on public display, and when the staff brought out a piece of knitting from storage, I knew that I was looking at something very special. It was a jacket knitted in camel-coloured silk and gold metal thread. From the shape and style of the garment, it has been attributed to the late 16th century, but all that is known about it is that Sir William purchased it from his art dealer friend Mr John Hunt in August 1937. The knitting is so fine that it gives the impression of having been created by the attendants of Titania in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. This and its obvious great age give it a supernatural presence.

Closer examination reveals a mystery, for despite the skill of the long-forgotten knitter, the sewing-up is of poor quality. It becomes clear that the knitting has been inexpertly cut and shaped into its present style. I wanted to create a version of the jacket in modern yarns, and the achievement of this aim turned into an exercise involving innovative use of the Fair Isle technique. The Elizabethan Jacket requires skill to make, but it is worth the effort to reproduce something that could have been knitted around the same time that Shakespeare wrote the above-mentioned play.
