The flowers of moorland plants are generally very small in scale and the juxtaposition of different plants, such as heathers and mosses, produce stunningly colourful carpet-like effects. I originally created this allover pattern to depict the very different carpets of colour formed by the machair and meadowsweet croftland in bloom, but the scale and delicacy of the pattern is also perfectly suited to depict the moorland carpet.
For colour, I turned to one of my Mamba images of heathers and underwater lochan plants. Kelpie, Selkie and Lapwing hint at the dark loch background while Sundew, Mountain Hare, Clover and Tormentil express the colours of the blooming and fading heathers, and the bronze underwater vegetation.
