Story
The shoreline of the Isle of Lewis is a varied and constantly changing environment. From the Tràigh Mhòr at Tolsta, with its beautiful, long stretch of beach in colours that would not look out of place on a Mediterranean shore, to the shingle beaches at Brue which are constantly pounded by the Atlantic Ocean, there are myriad sources of inspiration.
In contrast to the rounded shingle beaches are the ragged and sharp cliffs which form the shoreline at different points around the island. These cliffs give way slowly to the sea, leaving jagged rocks at their feet. Sheshader, named after a village by a rocky eastern shore, takes inspiration from these harsh areas of shoreline with a textured pattern. This pattern echoes the lines of the rocks, and is strengthened and picked out by a second colour at the base of the body. These geometric lines are then softened as the pattern becomes texture only, just as the sea softens and covers the ragged shoreline. This design is a tribute to Annie Macaulay who was born in Sheshader in 1875; she was my great-grandmother and a great knitter.
Sheshader is a design of heirloom quality which requires patience and perfectly even knitting to show off the subtle elegance of the stitches. This makes it a special project for expert knitters.
