The Lovebirds design was inspired by one of the Fairy Stories of Oscar Wilde – The Happy Prince. This rather sad tale is about a town where the poor are left to die of cold in the streets, watched over by the golden statue of the Happy Prince. The statue feels great sorrow over the plight of the people and enlists the help of a swallow to distribute his gold leaf and jewel embellishments to the poor. The swallow stays too long in the winter frost and dies of cold, breaking the statue’s leaden heart. The townspeople, noticing how drab the statue has become, tear the statue down and take it away to melt it:
“What a strange thing!” Said the overseer of the workmen at the foundry. “This broken lead heart will not melt in the furnace. We must throw it away.” So they threw it on a dust-heap where the dead swallow was also lying.
“Bring me the two most precious things in the city,” said God to one of His Angels; and the Angel brought Him the leaden heart and the dead bird.
“You have rightly chosen,” said God, “for in my garden of Paradise this little bird shall sing for evermore, and in my city of gold the Happy Prince shall praise me.”
The pattern of plump, contented birds represents the garden of Paradise, while the heart-themed pattern shows the mended lead heart of the Happy Prince. The Sunshine colourway evokes the warmth of summer, and the Fireside colourway a glowing winter fire.
