The tradition of bearing coats of arms started in the 12th century as a means of identification in the chaos of battle, but it soon turned into a way of displaying ancestry and status. Heraldic emblems were not only reproduced on every available surface but were also worn by men, women and children alike. Today we are still surrounded by heraldry but it is usually of a commercial and corporate nature. Heraldry has always been a bold and colourful art and a stained glass shield in the Burrell Collection is a particularly vibrant example. It shows the arms of the Somery family, which includes one of the most popular emblems in history, and is ideal for use in a child’s sweater.
