Alice Starmore® Scottish Fleet is an authentic 5ply gansey yarn, exactly as traditionally used to make the British fisher gansies in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The yarn is made from long fibres of pure new wool. It is worsted – that is, the fibres are combed rather than carded. It is then firmly plyed, producing a smooth strong yarn. It was originally made for durability in adverse weather conditions, and when well worn the garments created in this yarn developed a special beauty, as the textured stitches took on a pearl-like sheen which made the patterns seem to sparkle with movement. It has a beautiful drape, which makes it perfect for tailored designs. Scottish Fleet is a specialist yarn, and needs to be knitted with a firm tension to show the stitches to perfection. The results are well worth the effort, producing garments of heirloom quality.
