This pack contains all the Alice Starmore® Scottish Fleet yarn required to make the Beadwork design from A Collector’s Item in your chosen size. You will require a copy of A COLLECTOR’S ITEM for the pattern instructions, the book A Collector’s Item is available for purchase here.

The book contains just the instructions for the child’s version. By popular request, I wrote pattern amendments for adult sizes, for use with the original instructions in the book. These amendments are specific to the size ordered.

This design is available in a choice of cream or navy Scottish Fleet.

Before the 20th century the teaching of needlework skills to young, wealthy girls was approached from a somewhat military angle. Training would begin around the age of six and a young girl would be expected to be highly competent with a needle by the time she was in her early teens. The first projects were samplers of horizontal bands which would show different stitches and techniques, and when completed would be kept for reference in later years. Then pieces for display would be tackled; handkerchiefs, clothing, bed linen, mirror edgings and many other household items were decorated with all the styles learnt to date. A pair of ornamental fire bellows in the Burrell Collection is the kind of small project that would have been made by a young girl. It shows a seated woman on one side, and a vase of flowers with the date 1673 on the other. It is a mixture of beadwork and embroidery, with the figure stitched in silk thread. I have used the fine patterns from the woman’s dress and the overall quiet atmosphere of the piece to create a delicate cardigan for a child.
